Rodents tunnel through attic insulation and leave droppings and nesting material behind. Once insulation is contaminated, it should come out rather than be covered over.
Mold or Mildew

Lingering Odors

Choosing What Goes Back In
In many Northeast Florida homes, the AC air handler and ductwork sit in the attic. That matters when you choose replacement insulation, because the two options handle that equipment very differently.
Spray foam on the underside of the roof deck brings the attic, and the AC equipment in it, inside the conditioned space. It insulates and air-seals in one step, reduces the risk of mold and humidity problems, can save up to 50% on energy costs and can help extend the life of your AC.
Blown-in fiberglass on the attic floor keeps the attic vented and hot, but restores R-value to the living space below. ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated attic in our climate zone, and starting from a cleared attic is the same as starting uninsulated.

Why Removal Beats Adding More on Top
It’s tempting to blow new insulation over the old. But if the old layer holds droppings, mold or odors, covering it just traps those problems in your attic.
Removal also gives you a clear view of the attic itself, including roof decking, ductwork and pest entry points, so issues can be fixed before they’re buried again. If your attic insulation only has a few damaged spots, insulation repair may be the better fit.

How do I know if my attic insulation needs to be removed?
Your attic insulation should be removed if it shows rodent droppings or nesting, mold, water stains, lingering odors or heavy matting. These problems don’t go away under a new layer. If you’re unsure, we’ll inspect the attic and tell you whether full removal or a targeted repair makes more sense.
Can I just add new insulation on top of the old?
Adding new insulation on top only works if the old insulation is clean, dry and free of pests. If it’s contaminated, moldy or holding odors, covering it traps those problems in your attic. Removing it first also lets you spot leaks and entry points that need fixing before the new insulation goes in.
Should I choose spray foam or blown-in fiberglass after removal?
The best choice depends on your attic and your AC setup. Spray foam on the roof deck brings the attic and any AC equipment inside the conditioned space and air-seals as it insulates. Blown-in fiberglass on the attic floor restores R-value while keeping the attic vented. We’ll explain both options for your home.
