Your Attic Does More Work Than You Think
In a Jacksonville summer, the attic is where much of your home’s heat problem starts. The sun beats on the roof all day, and that heat moves down into the rooms below unless the attic is properly insulated and sealed.
In many Florida homes, the AC air handler and ductwork also sit in the attic. That means your cooling system is working inside the hottest space in the house, which makes the attic one of the most important places to get insulation right.
Clark Spray Foam offers two main approaches to attic insulation: spray foam on the underside of the roof deck, or blown-in fiberglass on the attic floor. Each one works differently, and the right choice depends on your home and your goals.

Two Ways to Insulate Your Attic
The big difference is where the insulation goes and whether the attic stays vented.
Spray foam on the roof deck (sealed attic)
Spray foam applied to the underside of the roof deck seals the attic and brings it inside your home’s conditioned space. Your air handler and ducts then sit in a much cooler space instead of a hot, vented attic.
Blown-in fiberglass on the attic floor (vented attic)
Blown-in fiberglass is spread across the attic floor, above your ceilings. The attic stays vented and hot, but the insulation slows heat moving into the living space below. See our blown-in fiberglass insulation page for details.
Which spray foam goes on the roof deck?
Open-cell spray foam is often used along roof decks, though the right type depends on the home. Our open-cell vs. closed-cell spray foam guide explains the differences.

How Much Attic Insulation Do You Need?
Northeast Florida is in IECC climate zone 2, a hot-humid climate. For homes in zone 2, ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated attic and R-38 when you’re adding to an attic that already has 3–4 inches of insulation. The Florida Building Code’s prescriptive minimum for ceilings in new zone 2 homes is R-38.
R-value is only part of the picture. Air sealing gaps and cracks matters just as much. Spray foam insulates and air-seals in one step, while fiberglass does not stop air movement on its own.
Signs Your Attic Needs Work
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth taking a look in the attic.
Hot upstairs rooms
Bedrooms and bonus rooms under the roof that stay hot all summer usually point to an attic that isn’t keeping heat out.
AC running constantly
If your system seems to run nonstop on summer afternoons, heat from the attic may be overwhelming it, especially when the air handler and ducts are up there too.
Thin or patchy insulation
You can see the ceiling joists, or the insulation is uneven, with bare spots near the edges or around the attic access.
Damaged insulation
Insulation that is wet, matted, stained, or disturbed by rodents or insects no longer performs the way it should.
When Old Insulation Should Come Out First
Not every attic is ready for new insulation. If the existing insulation has mold or mildew from moisture, pest damage, absorbed odors from smoke or pets, or a buildup of dust and allergens, it’s usually best to remove it before adding anything new.
Removal can also make sense when you’re switching approaches, such as moving from loose insulation on the attic floor to spray foam on the roof deck. Learn more about our attic insulation removal service.

From start to finish you felt like you were dealing with a small company which in my opinion are the best. On time for their appointments and and seamless paperwork. On the day of installation, they were on time at my house then their crew worked their asses off for 10.5 hours. Left my place just they found it in the morning. I am beyond pleased with the work of this company.Posted on Google![]()

No more wondering what a great spray foam job will do for your comfort. In the months leading up to Clark Spray Foam replacing our attic insulation, peak temperatures in the garage were over 100°. You can only imagine the attic temperatures were at least 15° higher over the entire house. After removing the blown in over just the living spaces and encapsulating the entire attic including the garage and rear porch, peak temperatures in the garage have dropped to below 85°. Surface measurements in the attic match. The whole house feels cooler and we even experience morning condensation on the outside of the windows proving the insulation is doing its job. Clark Spray Foam was prompt, professional and when an equipment failure delayed completing the work in one day, Mike called and scheduled the completion the very next morning.Posted on Google![]()

We had been having major trouble with our brand new AC unit keeping up on really hot days on the second floor. Like having the thermostat set for 73 but it being 78 or higher upstairs. The spray foam installation from Clark Spray Foam has made a huge difference and our new AC unit is working as it should now! Their estimator was great and answered all of my questions and concerns and the guys on the day of the job were very professional. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

Great staff starting with Sonia who you speak to initially to set up appointments. Then the estimated comes out, think Josh but not sure. Then the two workmen, Malaki and another nice young man. They did a great job at a competitive price. Now, waiting to see improvement in my electric bill. Thanks to all the nice, competent people at Clark’s insulation!Posted on Google![]()

Everyone from this company was very professional and easy to work with. In North Florida I’m used to contractors showing up, fixing something , creating a huge mess and then just leaving the mess in my house. This company was the total opposite!! it was refreshing to have a friendly sales rep and also working with professional office management. The crew did a great job! I am excited to cut back on AC and heating costs with this new spray foam insulation. Everyone was efficient, effective, and reliable.Posted on Google![]()

What a difference spray foam made in insulating our home. In the hottest part of the day, the house stays cool now. We were on the fence between more blown in or spray on. This company knew how much better spray on was as well as the concerns about open and closed cell spray on. Incredibly hot up in our attic and yet they completed the job in two days. I have a lower pitch roof and the 1950 addition had difficult access. We worked together and found a solution to get the job done. I can’t wait to see the savings on my next electric bill. I imagine that i will recover the cost in under two years… if not sooner. I am very happy that I chose Clark spray on!Posted on Google![]()

No matter what I tried my house always felt hot upstairs. Had my attic spray foamed in the summer. I have a large barn style house 5600 ft.² with a cedar lap board ceilings. They removed all of the fiberglass insulation and spray foamed the attic. The employees that I met from the actual sprayers to the laborers and the assistant that came to pick up the check, were all fantastic and personable. Everything did not go as planned, but all of the obstacles were handled professionally and they billed the original contract price. I stayed at a hotel a couple of days, the manufacturer recommends 24 hours dry time.Posted on Google![]()

Clark Spray Foam did an outstanding job insulating both our attic with open-cell spray foam and our crawlspace with closed-cell spray foam. From the first conversation to project completion, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. They took the time to explain the differences between open-cell and closed-cell foam, answered all of our questions, and made sure we understood the process and benefits before getting started. The installation crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and left the property clean when they were finished. The quality of the work was excellent, and it’s clear they take pride in doing things the right way. We were especially impressed with their attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction throughout the project. If you’re considering spray foam insulation for your attic, crawlspace, or entire home, I highly recommend Clark Spray Foam. Great company, great people, and exceptional workmanship.Posted on Google![]()

Clark’s crew did an amazing job! We had an initial consultation and they immediately gave me a quote.. The quote was super fair and better than what I expected. They came in day of install and secured and taped off areas to protect the home from the removal of old insulation. They had a full crew for the job and they were not playing around. These guys got right to it and worked as hard as I have seen people work. They were crawling in tight spaces fully suited in protective gear in 130+ degree attic. My hats off to these 6 guys . I appreciate the hard work. After the job was complete they walked me thru to make sure I was happy with the job. GREAT JOB! you will definitely be a company I refer out. Clark Spray foam did an outstanding job! They showed up on time and addressed my concerns or any issues that came up. They were all minor, but you want the job done right, which they did. We are in the middle of a massive mold project and Clark Spray Foam came highly recommended from our new HVAC company. Mike and Austin’s team did a great job on phase 1 of our project. First part is installing unfaced batting in the walls. Attached is an idea of just a quarter of the amount of replacement they did! Lots of angled walls that are a bit awkward to work with and they nailed it. We are excited to start phase 2 with them once our ceilings have been rebuilt! :) I’ll update this review after that part and add more pics/videos!Posted on Google![]()

These guys were truly incredible. They were very professional and they knew what they were talking about. They came over and gave me an estimate. The job itself was incredible and the way they left my shop after was unbelievably clean. I could not believe it. These guys were awesome. I called 4 companies to insulate my shed. I still haven't heard from one. The other 2 took forever and gave me crazy numbers. Clark called me by the end of the day and met me on site to quote it a day later. The price was better than the rest and he scheduled me on the spot. 8 days from request to final install. The installers banged it out in half a day and cleaned everything behind them. My wife actually went to the shed to make sure they had been on the property. The crew was clean and courteous. The salesman (Austin) called me later that day to make sure I was happy and everything went well. More contractors need to work this way. Thank you Clark!Posted on Google![]()

Overall great experience their 5 star rating is warranted. I emailed for a quote to get my metal building sprayed, I was responded to almost instantly while the other companies I contacted responded days later. They came out next day and provided a detailed quote that was fair. I had a bunch of schedule changes for when I needed the spray to be done and they worked around them with no issue at all. On the day of the spray the guys got here and were all super nice and professional, job looked good, very happy overall will use again if I ever need something else in the futurePosted on Google![]()

Attic Insulation FAQs
What is the best attic insulation for Jacksonville homes?
The best attic insulation depends on whether you want a sealed or vented attic. Spray foam on the underside of the roof deck seals the attic and brings your air handler and ducts inside the conditioned space. Blown-in fiberglass on the attic floor keeps the attic vented and slows heat moving into your rooms. We’ll recommend the right fit for your home.
How much attic insulation do I need in Northeast Florida?
For climate zone 2 homes, ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated attic. If your attic already has 3–4 inches of insulation, the recommendation for adding to it is R-38. The Florida Building Code’s prescriptive minimum for ceilings in new zone 2 homes is also R-38.
Why spray foam the roof deck instead of the attic floor?
Spray foaming the roof deck brings the attic inside your home’s conditioned space instead of leaving it vented and hot. In many Florida homes the AC air handler and ductwork sit in the attic, so sealing the roof deck puts that equipment in a much cooler space. Insulation on the attic floor keeps the attic itself hot.
Do I need to remove old attic insulation before adding new?
You should remove old attic insulation when it’s damaged or contaminated. Mold or mildew from moisture, rodent or insect damage, absorbed smoke or pet odors, and built-up dust are all good reasons to take it out first. Removal can also make sense when you’re switching to spray foam on the roof deck. Insulation that’s simply thin can often be added to.
How do I know if my attic insulation is failing?
Hot upstairs rooms and an AC that seems to run constantly are the most common signs of failing attic insulation. In the attic itself, look for thin or patchy coverage, visible ceiling joists, or insulation that’s wet, matted or damaged by pests. Any of these means the attic isn’t keeping summer heat out of your home.
Can attic spray foam lower my energy bills?
Yes, spray foam can save up to 50% on energy costs. It insulates and air-seals in one step, which helps keep summer heat and humidity out of your home. Spray foam can also help extend the life of your AC, and it won’t shift, settle or deteriorate over time.
